Everyone knows how nutritionally beneficial greens like broccoli, kale, or spinach can be and that you should try to include some these veggies in your daily diet. At the same time, it can be good to branch out from your usual routine and incorporate some other less-familiar green foods in your routine.
Spirulina, for example, is a form of sea algae that is so nutrient-packed, it’s considered a superfood! Just one teaspoon of spirulina contains four grams of protein, 80 percent of your daily iron content, and most of your requirements for B vitamins. It’s also packed with Vitamin A, containing over 800 percent of your daily needs!
While spirulina is often added to smoothies and juices in powder-form, nowadays there are tons of other products you can buy that are infused with the superfood. From chips and chocolate to popcorn and pasta, there’s bound to be a spirulina product out there for whatever you happen to be craving. Here are 15 to get you started!
Start your day off on the right foot with Gano C’real Spirulina Oats. This hearty cereal is made up of three components: spirulina, natural whole grain oats, and extracts from nutrient-rich Red mushroom. Reviewers report that this product is energizing, quick-to-prepare, and tasty. According to reviews, you simply have to add your milk, or non-dairy milk, of choice and you can also top it with fruits if you desire. Each “sachet” or package contains four grams of protein. You can get one box of 15 packets for $26.50.
For a healthier snack choice, consider swapping out your bag of potato chips for a bag of Go Raw Spirulina Super Chips. These chips are free from gluten, wheat, soy, nuts, and GMOs. They also contain no sugar, no oil, and no flour. The ingredients, all of which are organic, read as follows: sprouted sesame seeds, bananas, coconut, dates, and spirulina. Go Raw gently dehydrates these ingredients to form a crunchy chip that is still “alive” and as a result is easier to digest. You can get one three-ounce bag for a little over $5.
Eating healthy does not mean you have to deny yourself any sweets. There are plenty of products out there made with wholesome ingredients that just so happen to be naturally sweet! Take Betty Lou’s Spirulina Ginseng Energy Balls, for instance. These bite-sized treats are made primarily from almonds, gluten-free oats, inulin (which is a dietary fiber), fruit juice, brown rice crisps, agave syrup, sesame seeds, and of course, spirulina. Reviewers have described this product as the “perfect energy booster,” and a “delicious way to get through the day.” Each ball contains five grams of protein and six grams of dietary fiber. You can get a pack of 12 bites for a little over $15.
There are many health benefits to including a bit of dark chocolate in your diet, and these benefits only grow when you add superfoods to it! Vosges Haut-Chocolat Super Dark Bar uniquely combines dark chocolate with matcha green tea and spirulina powder. Each bar has four grams of protein and five grams of fiber. Don’t expect a green tea or spirulina-flavored chocolate bar, though, as reviewers point out, this product tastes just like a regular chocolate bar, it simply has the added nutrients and is given a slightly green tint from the spirulina. If that’s the kind of product you’re looking for, you can get one three-ounce bar for a little under $13.
Wrawp Spirulina Flat Bread Wraps are made from zucchini, apple, flax seeds, coconut, and turmeric. They have all the same texture as Wrawp’s other flatbread wraps (stretchy and chewy) but with the added benefit of spirulina! The nutrient-packed blue-green algae instantly transforms your lunch from a regular meal into a nutrient powerhouse! If you don’t feel like making a full-fledged meal these are also ready to be snacked on straight out the bag. Each $9 pack comes with six servings.
Sunfood Spirulina Crunchies are exactly what they sound like, little crunchy bits of spirulina. Similar to spirulina powder, Sunfood recommends adding this raw product to smoothies and sweet treats. Or you can use them as a healthy crouton of sorts like this Amazon reviewer! You can get one four-ounce bag of these crunchies for about $25.
Be prepared for when hunger strikes with these Raw Revolution Spirulina Dream Bars. These gluten-free bars are made from organic cashews, dates, sunflower seed kernels, agave, almonds, spirulina, and flax seeds. While all of the ingredients are definitely on the wholesome side, spirulina is what makes this bar particularly attractive. Additionally, reviewers comment that compared to other spirulina-infused bars, it’s definitely one of the better tasting ones with the spirulina adding a fresh, clean, and pleasantly subtle taste. Get a pack of 12 bars for a little under $20.
Shawnee’s Green Thumb Popcorn combines the goodness of vegetables with the addictiveness of popcorn. Each bag contains organic popcorn, spirulina, nutritional yeast, cayenne, garlic, and sea salt, as well as carrot, beet, and kelp powders. Each serving (28 grams) contains 5o milligrams of potassium, three grams of dietary fiber, and five grams of protein. It is also gluten-free, kosher, and non-GMO. Reviewers describe this snack as “dangerously delicious,” “full of flavor,” and one even said it was the “best popcorn they’ve ever had in their life.” Pretty passionate! To see if this product lives up to the hype, you can get eight bags for about $32.
Introduce a little color to your pasta entrée with Mendake Japanese-Style Spirulina Noodles. This product is made from three simple ingredients: wheat flour, salt, and spirulina. It is low-fat and contains no cholesterol, preservatives, artificial flavors or colors. They’re also quicker to make than your typical pasta, with one serving only taking three to four minutes to cook. You can get one 180-gram bag for $20.50.
Kale and kale chips have grown in popularity over the last few years. Rebel With a Cause Kale Chips takes the popular snack to the next level by adding nutritious ingredients like chia seeds, nutritional yeast, spirulina, turmeric, and maca powder. These raw chips are then dehydrated to keep all of the nutrition in the chips, a.k.a where you want them. Each package contains six grams of protein, two grams of fiber, and a slew of nutrients. You can get 12 bags for about $44.
Do you love adding color to your baked goods but feel uneasy about the weird chemicals commonly found in food colorings nowadays? If this sounds like you, definitely check out ColorKitchen Food Color Packets. These “botanical colors” are made from plants. Turmeric for yellow, beets for pink, and spirulina for blue. This particular kit contains five water-soluble blue packets, with each packet providing enough powder for icing at least a dozen cookies, if not more. Reviewers are raving about these color packets claiming that it is a great product for allergen-prone customers, provides vibrant color, and doesn’t have an “inky flavor” like some other “natural” colorings do. To check it out for yourself, you can get one box of five packets for about $14.50.
If you can get some nutrition while enjoying some chocolate, wouldn’t you? With Doisy and Dam Dark Chocolate Bar, you can. This bar is made from seven ingredients: cocoa mass, partially refined sugar, cocoa butter, mulberries, black sesame seeds, spirulina, and vanilla powder. It is 74 percent dark chocolate and each bar has 9.8 grams of protein. Pretty impressive for a chocolate bar! You can get one 100-gram bar for $12.
Coconut chips are pretty nutritious on their own, but Saf Raw takes the popular snack up a notch by adding spirulina. Saf Raw Mint and Spirulina Coconut Chips are made primarily of coconut chips, coconut vinegar, coconut nectar, and coconut sugar, which are then dusted with Himalayan pink salt, garlic, onion, and spirulina. In addition to snacking on these right out of the package, Saf Raw suggests using them as a topping on granola. Each serving is just 95 calories. This product is definitely on the expensive side with one 30-gram container setting you back about $16.50.
Consider trying something different on your next pizza night with Wrawp Spirulina Pizza Crust. This raw and gluten-free pizza crust is unique in that it contains zero flour. Instead, it is made with carrot, zucchini, apple, sprouted buckwheat, flax and sunflower seeds, coconut, turmeric, spirulina, and black salt. While reviewers admit that this crust does not exactly look appealing (it’s a dark brown-green color) but that you shouldn’t let its appearance fend you off! Although these crusts seem stiff at first, they soften greatly after you add sauce and of course, after you bake them. If you don’t feel like making a full-fledged pizza, you can also snap pieces off for a quick snack, like this Amazon reviewer does. To try it out, you can get one package (which contains two crusts) for $6.
If these Go Raw Sweet Spirulina Sprouted Bites seem similar to the Go Raw Spirulina Chips we mentioned earlier, it’s because they are. They are made with the same ingredients (sprouted sesame seeds, bananas, coconut, dates, and spirulina) except these bites are mostly made out of banana. The result is a snack that is chewier, sweeter, and much more fruity-tasting. While some reviewers described this snack as “overwhelmingly sweet,” others enjoyed the flavor. Satisfaction really depends on what your taste is. You can get six three-ounce bags for about $28.50.
