Where to Grab a Bite After an Oregon Hike

11 Steakhouses to Try in Portland and Beyond

18 Mind-Blowing Burgers in Portland and Beyond

Where to find something fresh and often cold-pressed

Along with the continuation of COVID-19, the beginning of a new year often marks a fresh start to develop healthy habits and boost one’s immune system. Juicing, whether for a cleanse or to supplement your daily meals, can be a great way to zap your system with vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. And smoothies have long been a great meal replacer for those unsure what to eat, but looking for something that will kick-start that brain power to get through the day.

Portland — with its populations of runners, outdoor sport nerds, and health-conscious produce lovers — is a city teaming with cafes, carts, and juice bars blending and squeezing drinks well-stocked with fruits and vegetables. If juicing at home is too much prep, work, and cleanup, one of these 10 killer juice and smoothie shops is sure to offer something satisfying and flavorful. Pretty much every place will let you customize your order, adding supplements and other ingredients for added flavor and nutritional value. For other healthy snacks and meals, check out this map.

A number of Portland restaurants have resumed onsite service. The level of service offered is indicated on each map point. However, this should not be taken as endorsement for dining in, as there are still safety concerns. For updated information on coronavirus cases in your area, please visit the Oregon Health Authority’s COVID update page. Studies indicate that there is a lower exposure risk when outdoors, but the level of risk involved with patio dining is contingent on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines.

Drink Mamey [mom-ayyye], the new Black-owned juice shop on NE Killingsworth, has a wellness, sustainability, and social justice focus, starting as an online business last year. Since then, Drink Mamey has absolutely exploded in popularity, serving drinks like the oft-ordered, blue-hued Majikal drink, made with pineapple, mint, and E3 (blue-green algae). The slightly spicy, citrus-forward This Will Make You Feel Good is another hit, with pineapple, orange, turmeric, ginger, lemon, and pepper. However, some of Mamey’s coolest drinks are the simplest, like the savory Just Celery juice. Juices go for $12, while a filling smoothie costs $8, but the shop also has a recycling program, providing customers a $1 discount on a future juice purchase when they return one of their empty glass bottles to the shop. Drink Mamey also offers delivery, taking pick-up orders on its website.

While the outside of Canteen’s Stark location is painted black, its interior is bright and sunny, where the team churns out bright and summery beverages year-round. With a location in both SE Portland and Lake Oswego, Canteen slings juice, smoothies, a trio of shots, and ultra colorful bowls. On warmer days, a Summer Breeze of pineapple, apple, cucumber, lime and cilantro is a bright and refreshing fix, while the Hawthorne—comprised of apple, carrot, parsley, lemon, and ginger—is an evergreen option. Canteen also has seasonal offerings, like a pumpkin, almond butter, maca and banana smoothie that was available in fall, or a Macaccino (and Mint Macaccino) with organic dark cocoa, fresh organic mint and organic cacao nibs. Regional juice bar chain Kure PDX used to have a smoothie on their menu called “The Hangover Kure,” but pretty much any item on the menu will make one feel better in a pinch. The menu ranges from sweet, tangy, fruit-focused smoothies like Lush Life — pineapple, banana, kale, ginger, orange juice, blue-green algae, and dates — to green drinks like a creamy Kid Kyoto, a combination of matcha, avocado, dates, coconut oil, and yogurt. Kure’s newest smoothie addition, Sparkle Pony, contains a medley of dragonfruit, avocado, pineapple, dates, and coconut yogurt. In addition to their smoothies, the shop sells meal replacer shakes and shots, as well. Order online for takeout.

Greenleaf is beloved for its extensive menu of fresh juices, smoothies, and super smoothies. The Green Lemonade tastes like it sounds — tangy — and is comprised of kale, spinach, ginger, lemon, pineapple, pear, and cucumber. The Blue Mango, with spirulina, banana, pineapple, mango, spinach, pineapple, coconut oil and cashew milk, will be satisfying to those with more of a sweet tooth. If shots sound good, those can be delivered too, à la Jell-O shot container; buckle up for some spicy minis, like the beet-centric Tigers Blood and a Blue Ginger with E3live. Order bottles or growlers of juice ahead of time online and then come pick up, or have your order delivered via DoorDash.

Best Friend Juice Bar and Cafe has two locations in Southeast Portland, including a coffee and smoothie truck on SE Division. Best Friend serves a bevy of drinks like lavender lattes, sweet and spicy golden milk elixirs, and matcha-spirulina lattes sweetened with coconut nectar, as well as an assortment of smoothies and juices. The shop’s piña colada tastes like the classic tropical beverage, with banana, pineapple, coconut creme, and coconut milk, along with the added nutritional benefits that spinach brings. Another standout is the Frank Ocean juice — no doubt named after the singer’s Channel Orange album color scheme — a heavenly blend of orange, carrot, turmeric, lemon, ginger, black pepper, and cayenne. It’s open for pre-orders via phone.

While the bike blender system that appeared on Shark Tank is no longer a central part of the business model, Moberi is still known for its top-notch açaí bowls, smoothies, and servings of gussied-up steel-cut oatmeal designed to make healthy food feel fun. Its drinks are often named for ‘90s cartoons and shows, like the Captain Planet (with kale, hemp seeds, banana, mango, ginger, apple juice and almond milk) or the Fresh Prince of Brazil, with açaí, strawberry, banana, goji berries, and apple juice. There’s a Moberi a location in each of Portland’s quadrants, and all except the PSU location are open during the pandemic. Order online for in-house delivery, or check them out on DoorDash and Postmates.

While the NE Alberta location may be temporarily closed, the Sip Juice Cart on SE 21st is still open. In addition to various juices, Sip offers creamy smoothies, fruity smoothies, green smoothies, and shots containing turmeric, ginger, E3live, or wheatgrass, as well as steamed juice elixirs blending things like apple, lemon, elderberry, and echinacea. The delicious Tropical Greens smoothie combines kale and spinach with pineapple, orange, and coconut oil, with dates for added sweetness and texture. There’s also the classic Orange Julie-ish with banana, vanilla, orange, dates, and almond milk. The cart is open for walk-ups and online orders.

Bottles from Portland Juice Co. are available at retailers across town, but the brand will also deliver to various regions in the metro area, from Wilsonville to Portland, to Gresham and Vancouver. Go online to stock up on the company’s juice cleanse systems, or just grab a few bottles to sip on something tasty. Place delivery orders online.

Aside from the actual act of juicing, the process requires a lot of prep work and clean-up, so it makes sense that many of the city’s juice shops are closed for at least a couple days. It’s unique that Xocotl (zo-koh-toll), located at the Portland Mercado, is open Monday through Sunday. Wildly popular (read: long lines) for cold-pressed juice, smoothies, bowls, and wellness shots, Xocotl also offers things like fruit bouquets and avocado toast. Don’t miss the Xoco-Coco, a customer favorite blended with cacao nibs, Mexican chocolate, coconut flakes, pure vanilla, banana, pineapple, and coconut milk. Those seeking something fruitier may prefer the bright and invigorating pineapple-orange-apple juice, particularly nice with added jalapeño, ginger, or even a CBD shot. Other exciting beverage options include a Nojito, a boozeless blend of cucumber, lime and mint with a chili powder rim, or the vacation-vibed champola de coco, a creamy coconut-based drink with a dose of soursop, a Caribbean fruit high in vitamin C with a flavor reminiscent of strawberries and pineapple. Xocotl is open for walk-up orders, also offering a new juice subscription where customers can sign up to pick up five cold-pressed juices weekly.

Hawthorne-based Rose + Lincoln offers up juices and smoothies in cups, jars, bottles, and growlers, and visitors simply can’t go wrong with any of the juices on the menu. Still, those looking for recommendations can try the Lucky 7, with peach, pineapple, lime, mango, orange, and raspberry, or the citrus-forward Knock Your Socks Off juice, a balance of citrus with ginger and cayenne. However, the wintery weather might call for a Warm + Cozy, a blend of red and granny smith apple, orange, ginger, and cinnamon served warm or cold. Cafe beverages change with the season, and customers can order online for pick-up. Rose + Lincoln also gives the option of gifting bottles of juice to healthcare workers on the front lines of COVID-19.
